CONGRESSES, BUSINESS AND INCENTIVE TOURISM

THE CZECH REPUBLIC IN WORLD STATISTICS OF CONGRESS TOURISM
From a world perspective on congress tourism, about 60 % of congresses are regularly held in Europe. Since the political changes in 1989 the percentage of congresses taking place in Central and Eastern Europe continues to increase. With strong competition among new born congress cities in this region, Budapest and Prague are clearly at the top.
The Czech Republic, particularly Prague, offers excellent conditions for business tourism. A statistical comparison from UIA (Union of International Associations) in 1996 shows the Czech Republic in a good light. After USA (836), France (478) and UK (475) etc. the Czech Republic ranks 20th with 94 meetings. In 1997 124 000 people participated in congresses held in the Czech Republic ranking it in 28th position.
The advantage of the Czech Republic is its location in the very centre of Europe, with its wide variety of attractive tourist destinations, as well as many cultural events and sights for the regular visitor. This and the fact that the country has a good infrastructure, present the Czech Republic as a very desirable destination.
Apart from the international conferences, managed by the members of UIA and ICCA, there are other events provided by other organizations. These events are not listed in the official statistics of the above mentioned associations. The total number of international conferences in the Czech Republic is about 200 events per year. For company meetings and promotions the Czech Republic seems to be a quite popular destination. The final number of those events, which is attended by more than 100 participants from more than 4 countries, is more than 500 in one year.
